Hi, my name is Naomi and I’m currently a student at Cumberland Community School. I’ve lived in Cumberland for almost 11 years. I have really grown to love the community and the people in it. I’m a part of the school leadership and sports teams. Being in my leadership class, I have learned so much about how to be a leader in the community and help others. That being said, I actually don’t know how to write an article so thanks to wiki-how, I know to start with a quote. “You aren’t truly listening to someone unless you are willing to be changed by what they have to say.” I chose this quote because it gives me hope for the future knowing that my generation and members of society can have a positive impact on the world just by listening. And I think I am someone who wants to listen.
My classmates, and many others I’m sure, are people who have a lot to say and can have a huge impact on our future with their curiosity and creativity.
I have always felt so lucky to grow up in a community where I feel at home. That feeling where you can steal eggs from your neighbours, or of knowing all your friends since kindergarten, really makes it obvious you are a part of things. Shopping down 5th street in Courtenay, biking or walking the Cumberland trails, having a bonfire at Goose Spit in Comox… the list is endless. I really hope it stays that way in the future: small, lots of forest, and welcoming and loving to everyone. For my generation and more to come I have confidence that we will be able to listen to one another and change in an abundance of beautiful ways.
As easy as it is to get caught up in things like social media and Instagram followers, I always try to keep in my mind the most important things, like family and friends.
